Dr. Zabaneh spoke for BUILD at its official opening in Dangriga in August 2026. In 2023 he presented a full-day seminar on the theory and applications of sustainable human development at the University of Belize; its thinking, from the four pillars to the capability framework, runs through BUILD’s courses.

Our story

From a rented hall in Belmopan to a home of our own.

  1. June 2014

    Founded

    The Belize Unity Institute for Leadership and Development is founded on the principles of human dignity, freedom, the common good, justice, care and agency, to positively impact the long-term sustainable human development of Belize.

  2. 2014 onwards

    First trainings, in Belmopan

    At the George Price Center for Peace and Development: the concept of sustainable human development, competency-based education, personal employment readiness and emotional intelligence.

  3. Later

    To Dangriga

    Trainings move to Dangriga, in rented space at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall, the Pelican Beach Resort and Ecumenical Junior College. Cell phone repair training for women follows, with Taiwan ICDF and the Taiwanese Embassy.

  4. September 2023

    The SHD seminar

    Dr. Louis Zabaneh presents a full-day seminar on sustainable human development at the University of Belize.

  5. 20 August 2026

    Official opening

    BUILD opens its own doors in Dangriga, with the Mayor, UNICEF and the Ministry of Education among the guests.

  6. 2026–27

    The year ahead

    A pilot graduate-level course in competency-based education for educational leaders, with the Ministry of Education, and tailored courses for Stann Creek schools.
