Development that starts with people.

Sustainable human development (SHD) is the process of enlarging people’s choices in the present without compromising the ability of future generations to enlarge theirs. It is the thinking behind BUILD’s vision, and this course is where most of our work begins.

The course was first delivered in Belmopan in 2014, at the George Price Center for Peace and Development, and later in Dangriga. In 2023 Dr. Louis Zabaneh presented it as a full-day seminar at the University of Belize.

Participants work through the ideas with Belizean case studies, then apply the framework to a decision facing their own school, office or community.

What you’ll learn

  • Sustainable development and human development, and why they are two sides of one coin
  • Leadership, from the great-man theories to transformational leadership
  • The four pillars of SHD: institutional, economic, social and environmental
  • Belize’s national strategy, Horizon 2030
  • Human agency and the eight marks of good governance
  • The Generalized Sustainable Capability Framework (GSCF)
  • Belizean case studies: the People’s Constitution Commission, the solar power loan, free high school education and the Blue Bond
